The electoral Commission of Ghana lead by Mrs. Jean Adukwei Mensah In an Inter Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) Meeting propsed to close the subsequent general elections at 3 o’clock pm instead of 5pm.
Reacting to this, Mr. Abdul Awal, a social commentator said that, it is a best decision taken by EC to close polls at 3pm but the challenges and problems in Ghana will affect the effectiveness of the decision.
He explained that, there are a lot of challenges in Ghana that always affect the election process that we have not been able to deal with. He mentioned of poor roads network which delay the transportation of election materials to their rightful destinations, also there is poor communication network which affect voters in the remote areas because, should there be any problem, electoral officers finds it difficult to reach their Boss on time to address it.
He expressed that, electoral Commission can only realize the beauty of their newly proposed decision should the existing ill conditions that affect the smoothness of the election processes are dealt with. Mr Samuel Boateng, a political analyst also opposed to the new reforms by the EC stating that, it may disenfranchise a lot of eligible voters who for some reason may delay before they visit the poll site. He cited that a lot of Ghanaians visit their workplaces before they go to cast their vote hence closing at 3pm instead of 5pm will deprive the voting right of many Ghanaians. He added that, the decision of the EC should should be in consensus with all stakeholders to ensure it effectiveness.
