A former Member of Parliament has hinted that he now rears poultry and livestock to make a living after he lost his Parliamentary slot to Honorable Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, the incumbent in 2012.
Honorable Michael Teye Nyaunu was speaking in an interview on Trust 98.3FM’s Agoo Ghana show hinting that life has not been so rosy after he left parliament.
Honorable Nyaunu known popularly as MTN said retiring as a Ghanaian parliamentarian without any personal investment is tough, “if you are not smart while you are in office, life will lash at you when you lose your seat” he added.
Mr. Nyaunu said parliament has its own internal issues that do not allow members to speak their true thoughts and feelings, adding that, sometimes “you are forced to do things the way your party leadership and members want”.
He said he did not get any ministerial appointment because some of his party members took to stigmatizing him anytime he said the truth about the way his party was governing the country at the time the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was in power when he was in parliament.
Nonetheless, Mr. Nyaunu served as a deputy speaker at the ECOWAS parliament during his tenure as MP; again he served on most committees in Ghana’s parliament.
Naming a few, he noted that he served on committees like Vetting Committee, Select Committee on Trade and Industry, Select Committee on Legal Affairs, and Select Committee on Local Government and Rural Development. He reminisced that he would have slapped Honorable Carlos Ahenkra when the latter took ballot papers away during the confirmation of the Speaker, Honorable Alban Sumana Bagbin in 2021.
