In a Monday morning confrontation at Asasehene, a group of men wearing National Democratic Congress (NDC) gear violently attacked supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and local residents who were celebrating the arrival of new road improvement machinery. These machines, part of the District Road Improvement Program (DRIP), were eagerly awaited by the NPP supporters.
As the NPP supporters, who were eagerly anticipating the remaining machinery, faced the attack, they fought back to protect their party members and the residents who had gathered to witness and photograph the event.
According to the Chairman of the NPP in the Upper Manya Krobo Constituency, the violence appeared premeditated and was believed to have been orchestrated by local NDC leadership.
The police intervened promptly to de-escalate the situation, although some NPP supporters were also seen trying to pacify the attackers.
A bystander expressed disappointment, stating that such violence undermines the spirit of development and calling for this year’s elections to focus on issues rather than violence.
One injured NPP supporter named the attackers as Labadi, Alinko, Alukpo, and Godson Amartey. Fortunately, calm was restored near the Trust FM premises and the Siontriso Methodist Basic School in Asasehene.
The DRIP program, announced by the NPP government, aims to address road infrastructure deficits, particularly in rural areas where farming is prevalent.
The initiative plans to equip each district and municipality with five sets of earthmoving machines, including a grader, bulldozer, tipper truck, roller or compactor, and water tanker.
These equipment are intended to help local assemblies build and maintain roads, improving transportation for commuters and farmers alike.
