The former National Organizer of the New Patriotic Party(NPP) has advised the grassroots base of the party to remain resolute as the government has been working tirelessly to put the economy back to resilient ways.
Mr. Sammy Awuku speaking to trustfmonline.com after a meeting with party members in the Upper Manya Krobo Constituency in Asesewa on Tuesday encouraged members to show strength and harmony in the face of extreme economic difficulties.
“Currently we (government) are involved in a major engagement with stakeholders who are also bondholders. I am confident that at the end of the day, the government will come out with a favorable response which will be a win-win situation. I also highlighted the fact that we need unity in the party,” Mr. Awuku told trustfmonlin.com.
Yet to be determined future of the intra-party presidential primaries, Mr. Sammy Awuku admonished party members to welcome all interested aspiring candidates since the contest within the NPP is a battle of ideas.
He said, “Any candidate who comes to the people should have the opportunity to listen to them,” adding that “anyone who comes should speak to the issues.”
The Former National Youth Organizer who declared his support for Dr. Mahamud Bawumia, took the opportunity to highlight the contributions of the Vice President to the party.
Reacting to calls from an NPP youth group that the vice president should resign if he has an interest in the upcoming presidential primaries, Mr. Sammy Awuku said the position of Dr. Bawumia is an elected role and thus has constitutional backing to remain in service while he battles for the contest.
He argues that the resigned appointees have a greater advantage over the vice president, where the former could campaign whole day, unlike the second Ghanaian gentleman.
Nonetheless, Mr. Awuku said if anybody felt the vice president must be compelled to resign, he should take the right course.
The Director General of the National Lottories Authority, Mr. Sammy Awuku has indicated that the Gold for Oil deal that the government is currently venturing into is best for the country as it will reduce the pressure on the Cedi and cost of fuel respectively.
Mr. Awuku said Ghana spends about 400 – 600 million Dollars to import Oil and its related products which is a major cause of the depreciation of the Cedi as government changes a lot of Cedi into foreign currency before it is able to import petroleum products.
The former National Organizer of the party hinted that the deal was also going to reduce the cost of fuel prices because Gold is a natural resource which belongs to all Ghanaians, adding that the deal will go a long way to bring the economy back on its feet.
In attendant for the meeting were the Upper Manya Krobo Constituency Chairman, Mr. Philip Mamphey and members of his executive, Council of Elders, Patrons, and some party faithful.
With Mr. Sammy Awuku were Mr. Nickson Kofi Tettey, former District Chief Executive for Yilo Krobo and Mr. Kofi Markson Walter, a former Eastern Regional Deputy Youth Organizer and others.
